shellless hermit crab

As we were looking at our tank we noticed one of the red hermit crab is out of the shell.I am going to lfs now for some shells . my question is where to put the shells when i get back from store. sorry I don't have my camera right now pretty cool sight .

what happened to his old shell?
Was he molting? they leave thier shells to molt.

The old shell is just sitting there, I put in 3 new shells. Both of my hermits jumped right in them.
