What type of water do you use? What is your phophate test at and what is your silicates test at? Is your nitrates high? Many thing contribute to algea. Do you have fish in this 10 gallon? If so how many and what are they?

You definately need tests kits. The MANDATORY ones are ph, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite. You will also want to get phosphate, alkalinity. If you ever want to get corals or clams you will also need calcium.
Do yourself a favor and buy the bags of salt, and mix the saltwater yourself. You can buy distilled water at any local foodmarket or just buy your own RO machine for around $100. You will save a lot of money in the long run. I personally would not trust any lfs to sell me saltwater premixed.

Amen to that. That's why they say never put their water into your tank when you get a fish from them. Just because they sell the fish, doesn't mean they always know what they're doing.

If you have a glacier water machine near you then you can use that water. I have used it for a few years and really like it. It is filterered really good and cost only like a quarter a gallon.
