beginners really should have lr,
It makes the job much, much easier,to keep a healthy tank
and the skimmer will also help alot, but don't be mislead, you don't need a skimmer BECAUSE you have live rock
Sounds to me as if your lfs wants you to use cc and an undergravel filter, just by the lines he uses
well, FYI, if this is the case, cc and a ugf is not by far the best thing you can do for your little marine buddies
Do some research, before you take any advice from any lfs, most ofteeen their opinions don't reflect waht is best, but what is on their shelves
You did right by coming here and asking, this place is set up for people to share their experinces and help one another, and one thing you can bet on we have been through what we say, and we can not profit from advising you at all

another note about live rock and anemones, if you are considering anemones, you
DEFINITELY
WANT LR AND A GOOD SKIMMER
give us some more tank stats, if you would like help getting set for a reef with or without anemones
ie. size, substrate, filtration, lighting and so forth
If you haven't started yet, more info on what you would like, maybe we can save you alot of time and money, not to mention heartbreak, losing livestock hurts, because this hobby gets addicting and most people fall in love with their system, if you are a vet, I appologize for the assumption

Get the lr... it actually is not that expensive when you compare it to other decorations that you will have to put into your tank.
Also... if it is over $4 a pound at you lfs don't buy it. You can always find the stuff online for under $4 a pound with shipping.
Also 2-day shipping is always fine with this stuff... you'll have to cycle it in the tank anyways.
Also about your protein scimmer question... you can make one yourself with a pump and some pvc pipe. It will not run you anywhere near $150... For you tank though I would just buy a backpak... you can usually find them new online for around 110 -125...
Hope that helps - what was the other question?

a bakpak is a type of skimmer, made by CPR
and you would be much better off with this , ls and lr than an Emorer 400, we have an Emporer, which only is used for circulation(no filters in or bio wheels on)), and the occasional addition of carbon, but you can buy purchase a couple of good powerheads for the same price to get better circulation
as for the anemone they are extremely difficult past a few months so you may wish to wait a little while, vets with as much as 5 yrs exp. often have little luck achieving a year maybe 20% go beyond this and anemones have a life span beyond ours)
true perculas like
Host Anemones:
Heteractus magnifica ~ Magnificent sea anemone.
Stichtodactyla gigantea ~ Gigantic sea anemone.
Stichtodactyla crispa ~ Leathery sea anemone.
or false peculas like
Host Anemones:
Heteractus magnifica ~ Magnificent sea anemone.
Stichtodactyla gigantea ~ Gigantic sea anemone.
Stichtodactyla mertensii ~ Merten's sea anemone.
this does not mean that they won't take to a different type, or even a soft coral, they will even do well without any, also carpets, depending on species, have a known diet which includes shrimp and small fish(including tank mates), so choose your anemone wisely, and research thoroughly and then research again before you purchase one

be carefull with a carpet anemone. Years back when I was in highschool and my dad was supporting the tank that my brother and i wanted he bought this awsome looking blue carpet anemone. Back then i didn't do much research and neither did he. Well all but one of our fish happened to disappear within a week. We took it back to the store.
As everyone else said get the lr. Maybe the lfs was just trying to discourage you from getting into corals at this point because of lack of exp. The lr will help with filtration and coral can be added when you learn more about reef tanks and when you have the proper set-up.
