Should I get rid of my cannister?

I use my cannister filter to run pads, carbon and sometimes phosphate sponge. I clean it every week but it is becoming a hassle and I'm not sure if it is worth it.
Should I get rid of it, or should I always run carbon / phos. sponge a few days a week?
The tank is currently FOWLR and will most likely stay that way.

The canister is probally killing alot of pods. But if you're just a few fish, why mess with what works for you? Personally, I'd get rid of it, but everyone does this differently.
