i told my LfS that im cycling with raw shrimp, and he said that the sudden ammonia spike and quick cycle could cause a strong and quick brown algea bloom. has anyone experienced this will cycling using raw shrimp? if this is true then how bad is it going to get? is there any thing i could do to prepare for this? any info appreciated. thanks

I think that most tanks get some brown alge bloom when cycling, and then it eventually goes away. I don't know if raw shrimp would make it worse. But how much do you trust the lfs? Are they just trying to sell you some fish to make a buck? Just a thought...

I cycled my 72 using shrimp and my 37 using fish. I didnt see any difference in algae bloom, both had it and both lost it only the 72 cycled in just over a week and a half and the 37 took 4 weeks. Are you sure this guy at the lfs didnt have a bottle of cycle, some live sand and a couple of damsels in his hands when he told you that. Might have been just trying to make a buck. The algae bloom, even if it did hapen, IMO, would be better than trying to catch the damsels anyday.

I cycled my 30g with two cocktail shrimp in just under two weeks. I just kept my lights off and I didn't have an algea problem at all.

SM that was funny.
who cares if you have some brown algae? that's a sign you are nearing the end of cycling. algae is something you will never be able to be clear of. use a cleaning crew to keep it at a minimum and spend a few minutes every other day cleaning it up where they don't

My 90g just finished cycling in less than 2wks and I experienced a pretty big brown algae problem. I don't know if it's any worse than normal because this is my first saltwater tank but it seemed pretty bad to me. I'm planning on getting a cleaning crew to take care of it but it's now 15days since I set up my tank and my readings are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 0-10 nitrates so if brown algae is my biggest problem (knock on wood) I'm not gonna complain.

haha. No the guy at the LFS wasnt trying to make a buck off me. He adviced me to do nothing until the cycle was done. Thanks for looking out on that. Well some of the names responded have responded to me before so u all know im a newbie. An algea bloom during the end of the cycle was somthing i wasnt aware of. Thanks for the insight.
