shrimp cycle?

i have never used shrimp to cycle my tank and i am trying it in my girlfriends 55. we put in two raw shrimp yesterday, how long do we leave them in? i know that you are supposed to until the ammonia rises but we used Amquel for our declorinater and cannot test for ammonia because it gives faulty readings.

you only have to leave them in until they start to decay, thats starts the cycle. if you want want you can let them go a few more days after that i it wouldn't hurt either. you'll know when thay start to decay by the smell it gives off, pretty unpleasant.
