i want to buy a shrimp for my tank. im thinking either a cleaner shrimp or a coral banded shrimp. but im leaning towards a coral banded shrimp because it is much more readily available were im from. my questions are, i have a sixline wrasse, a pair of clowns and a coral beauty in my tank. i also have some corals includig a torch coral, and a leather, and some mushrooms as well as a bta, plus hermit crabs and snails, so will a coral banded shrimp be ok in my tank?, this site says they are reef safe but i have a feeling they are not.
also will the shrimp be safe in my tank with my sixline, have heard they can get abit nasty with inverts?
thankyou

I just got a coral banded shrimp myself 2 days ago. I was told at the store that they may nibble on some soft corals and polyps. I have a bunch of mushrooms and a whole lot of colt coral (wouldn't mind it if he would eat some). So far he has been good, no eating of anything other than food found on the rocks, and he hasn't bothered any snails, crabs or fish to the best of my knowledge. He's fun to watch. I think that the cleaner shrimp is always the safest bet though if you want to get a shrimp that is fun to watch and totally reef safe. My old cleaner shrimp used to swim up and would take food from my hand. But if you search the threads here, there was once a coral banded shrimp that did the same for someone else.

when i went to my fishstore i was told that coral bandeds will kill my other shrimp, hermits, etc.... and my coral banded never picks on any other shrimp, and i had a 6line with my shrimps at one time also, and no problems at all. now an arrow crab, thats a different story, killed me 25 dollar blood shrimp within an hour.

If you ever want to add another type of shrimp, I would stay away from the coral banded. They are very territorial, and by this I mean the entire tank. So, with this being said if the answer is no, then the coral banded is an awesome shrimp for your tank. And yes, they are reef safe, except for very small fish, or hermits if food is not available.
