well i am just about done with the 30 gall built in the wall tank. I have to questions the first is shut off valves. should i spend the 7.00 for one for general maintence and such. The next qeustion wet dry hose( the one that looks like a vaccum cleaner.. glue and know it will never leak or take the risk of the air tight.. my lfs states not to glue..i just see this going all over the floor.. ps i do like the siphon drill idea that has been brought up

I use shut off valves on everything that has water running through it. I like the idea of being able to restrict flow and shut off the water for routine maintance. I even have a valve to divert water from my sump to a bucket for doing small water changes.
As far as the Overflow hose.. I never glued mine. I have had quite a few boxes and never had one fall off. They will get salt creep around the edge, but never had one fall of..

Plastic hose clamps work great for hoses that may see saltwater too.
Secure and I've never had one of them break or let loose either.
