I have an unicorn tang that has red at the base of his pectoral fins and dorsal fin. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it.

We will need more info. How long have you had it? What are your water stats? How big is your tank?

check your ammonia and other water parimeters nitrates nitrites ph ect.make sure all of these are very good this fish doesnt tolerate polutants well .what size tank is he in.reef? how do your othe fish look any others showing simular signs? do a water change remove carbons if you use them and i would dose the tank with melafix .it sounds like a mild case of bacterial due to poor water quality.just from the symptoms alone.be sure water quality is good before dosing

All of the parameters are within their limits besides the hardness which has always been high. The tank is about 45 gallons. The fish is about 5-6 inches long. I started to feed them Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef a few days ago and they started acting weird. I didn't feed them that for a few days and then I tried it again. Right after I did about a 50% water change. The next day one of the clownfish was dead. There is still another clownfish, a gobie and an angelfish left beside the tang. There is no living coral in there but it was starting to come back. The tank has Coralife fluorescent lights. Let me know if I can tell you anything else. I really appreciate everyones help.

please forgive me for sounding like the tang police for a moment i try not to but at times i just cant help it i only mean to help.first your tank is waYyy to small for a unicorn tang certainly for one of that size.I know because i have one also these are an open water species of tang they swim in areas that surround the reefs they need space .and get to be 24 inches they get big.ok now that being said I feel better now.he needs a much better diet made for an herbivore . he also needs to be fed 3-4 times a day .try foods such as formula 2 by ocean nutrition ,emerald entrese veggie flake ,kelp flakes, a good variety of foods, they even eat hair algae. as for your angel fish use angel formula by ocean nutrition this will help him along.the prime reef is cood for your clown and goby.
as for your corals you say they are comming back?did they crash? the worse thing you can do is starve you fish in a stressful time .I would dare to say you have water quality issues having then within paremeters is not always a good thing if you have coral die offs there is def a problem.the symptoms you have described are consistant with high amonia or nitrates poisoning. be sure your ph is at good levels 8.1 -8.3 i they are lower your corals wont grow and your fish will stress more from their die offs.how often are you doign testing and water changes ?
you want your sg at 1.024 at least for them also(corals)
nitrates as close to 0 as possible no higher than .10
these are more acceptable limits for amonia and nitrites also if your above that .10 then get it down to at least that.then treat the fish with melafix to repare the damage and reduce stress.i hope this helps good luck
