Are you feeding it regularly? What kind of lighting do you have?
Sometimes they croak for no reason. I hear they are hard to take care of.
It honesltly does not look that bad.

I grow phytoplankton and pour it in the tank regularly. Lighting is a higher end T5 fixture on timer with actinics on 2 hours b4 and after.
It used to open up all the time. Haven't seen it open in about 2 weeks, which is when the brown crud appeared.

make sure it is in a low flow, but moderate lighting area.
You will need to cut down the nutrients in the tank asap if you are going to have any chance at saving it. The brown stuff is algae growing on the coral's skeleton, where polyps have recently died off. Lower the amount of feedings you are doing to cut down on algae growth. Usually they have a very low rate of recovery once algae gets on the skeleton.
Do not touch or move the coral, it will be very sensitive to any bumping, dropping or touching the polyps.
I hope this helps... good luck!
