Sick of skimmer, getting new one. What is a good kind?

Right now I have a hang-on Sea Clone skimmer that only works half the time.
I wish I had found this board before I bought my stuff because my LFS screwed me with this stuff! I'm slowly replacing all the wrong things they sold me, my last purchase was my PC light, now I think the skimmer should be next. What in is a good kind to get? I read somewhere that Berlin is the best, any thoughts?:help:

Is this for a sump of hang on?
A Bak Pak 2 or 2R (reef ready version) are both good skimmers IMO for tanks in the 30 gallon range and under. It will definitely be an improvement over your sea clone.
Try doing a search on here for the bak pak. Lots of people use them and are happy with them.

This would be a hang-on. I don't have a sump. I will be moving the end of this year and then I plan on getting a larger tank and investing more, but for now I just have a simple setup with LR, skimmer, canister filter, PH's, and of course a heater. I will use this tank for maybe a species specific tank after I get my new one, so I want a good skimmer and a hang-on type.
If anyone has any better ideas, please share! :D

Jess, what is your sea clone doing? I have one and after I got it 'tuned' it works awsome. I have had nothing but good experiences with sea clone, although at first I thought it was junk.. Interrested in trying to get yours working right?

Well lets see, it hasn't been collecting anything for the last 3 weeks or so. I have tried everything, I'm always adjusting the air, I turn the little knob thing a little bit and wait a day or two, then turn it a little more and wait... There is foam, but it doesn't make it high enough to get into the collection cup, and then sometimes it will just start spitting a pile of bubble back into my tank. I'm really tired of messing with it, but if I could fix it so it works like it should I'm willing to give it a second chance.
any ideas?:notsure:

Check out the remora hang-on skimmers. A little costly, but well worth it.

I have a CPR Bak Pak 2R and couldn't be happier. I replaced the Rio 600 with a Rio 800 I already had. After the first 2-3 days of adjusting it is working great. I empty the container every other day and the 2R has managed to keep micor bubbles out of my tank. I would buy it again if I had too.

TimG- What size tank do you have? And does anybody know if one kind of skimmer works better with a different size tank then another? That may be a dumb question, but I know that is the case with some other consumer products out there:)

Jess,
I have a 55 gal tank. I never tried it with the Rio 600, but the Rio 800 works great and pulls dark stuff out and plenty of it. I just put the Rio 600 in the corner 800 was, so I really did not lose any circulation.

I use the bak pak 2 in a 55 gallon and I love it! I have had no problems with it and everything seems really healthy.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll do a little price compare and research on both of those. I even put a new pre-filter on mine and it did nothing :nope: So I'm really sick of this, I didn't panic too much before this because my water quality has been pretty good, but I want to know I have a skimmer that is doing it's job! I like my fish and want them to be happy :happyfish

Hmm, I think I could try that. I don't have the same setup, but maybe if I just tried the airstone and cutting the top off it may work  Thanks for the link! :D

Jess, Before you get another skimmer, read this thread that I posted a several months ago.
Concerning you protein skimmer, I also have a SeaClone 100, but I believe many skimmers have similar features, specifically some type of Air Intake... IMO, there's at least two things to consider. First, it usually takes awhile (a few weeks) for a skimmer to get "broken in". Assuming you've been using your skimmer since you started up your tank, that's should not be the problem. Second, the problem I think you may be having is that the Air Intake could be improperly adjusted... It may seem like an obvious question, but is yours open? I had a problem with that once because I accidently closed it all the way while trying to adjust the bubbles out. Too much air going into your skimmer and on into the tank can be a problem also. If too many bubbles are being pushed through the skimmer, more of the protein you're trying to remove goes back into the tank , instead of the collection cup. If you'll close the air intake all the way and then slowly turn it, a tiny bit at a time(no more than a couple of notchs or so), waiting a minute or so between turns, you'll slowly get fewer and fewer bubbles. You'll probably end up turning it at least a couple of full turns (from the FULLY CLOSED position) before it gets close to the proper adjustment level. Initially, while it's getting "broken", you will have some bubbles, even if it's properly adjusted
. What you're aiming for when you first
adjust your skimmer is a point where you have the least amount of bubbles. Remember, you shouldn't remove the air valve totally, nor should it be closed all the way. Patience will pay off with the protein skimmer working as it's intended; removing the "bad" stuff from your water. Good luck with your tank! HTH

Well first I got my skimmer after my tank was done with it's cycle, so that was approx. Nov-Dec. and when I first got it, it worked great I got all kinds of junk in the cup. Now, nothing and I've even tried opening the air valve all the way, as in taking the little knob thin off, didn't help. I too accidentally closed mine all the way one time and I saw all these bubbles going into my tank, I figured it out and opened it again. That's not the problem now though, its open all the time and it will just start spitting bubbles back into the tank and I didn't touch the air valve !:nope:
I have already tried what you said and slowly adjusted it from closed to open, a small turn at a time only I waited for like a day not a minute, but it had no effect on it.
Last nigh I saw the bubbles make it high enough that maybe 1/4 tsp. made it into the cup, but that was it!
Anything else I could try? :notsure:

Remora by AquaC all the way. Be sure to get the pre-filter box. I have not had to do any adjustments. Very easy to clean and maintain! It really keeps the water clean!

I use a Remora by AquaC also, works great. But if i had to do it over I would not get the pre-filter box, took mine off and the skimmer works alot better. imo
