Hello, I'm new to this and of course I have a lot of questions. can someone tell me how can I tell if the fish has a disease, what are the signs?is it normal for a fish to stay in one place for a long time. I have a sailfin tang and it seems to be picking at the thermometer and stay there for a long time. I don't know if it is sick or what but it is eating fine and still swims around. Just curious. what should I do?

Hi, and welcome to the site.....
There is a section titled fish disease and treatment...right at the top of that section is a listing of fish disease along with pictures to help you see what your fish may have. Beth is our sick fish guru and she knows what to do to help.

Tangs exhibit strange behaviors. If he is eating fine and shows no red marks, spots, torn fins, red gills, or other ailments then he is likely fine. Feel free to check out the D&T section anyway. It is a most valuable resource : )

I wouldn't worry if its eating then things are fine. I have a saddle back butterfly for now over 5 years and every time after its eats it does a dash to the corner and almost does a head stand. But it continues to eat and live. Fish are very interesting creatures.
