Silicon grease on bulkhead gasket, or not?

On another forum I asked a question about whether to use silicon grease on bulkhead gaskets as a means to protect the rubber from drying out over time and it caused quite the debate. Some said the proper way to install a bulkhead was to use nothing at all on the gasket, while others said to use silicon, and yet others said to use petroleum jelly which goes against everything I know about rubber.
Since there are more members on this forum I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I use nothing, I make sure the glass is clean of any sand, dust, grit, and hand tighten with a bulk head wrench (Not over tight) I have no probles doing it this way.

petroleum jelly will eat away at the rubber over time so that is not a good idea. I actually used some on the plumber's grease for mine.
