siliconeing a cracked heater

hello, im just wondering if it woudl be okay. i have an unused 200 watt heater that came with my eclipse when i first started the tank. well, literaly minutes after i took it out, it cracked. the place where i got the heater suggested that i dont use it but wouldnt get a me a new one. well, im just wondering if i could silicone over the crack. i know that owuld make it waterproof, but would i have to worry about stray voltage?

i figured that owuld be the problem. but was just worrying about the electrical abilities of silicone and if anyone had ever done it. i still wouldnt have used it. i dont even have an extra tank to use it. i was jsut wondering

If you are really curious about if the fix would work, try it and then use it in your water mixing tank / trash can.
When i mix saltwater, i use a 30 gal trash can and have a powerhead and heater just for such use.

lol. well iw asnt going to try it! lol. i was just cleaning out some stuff and found it. i guess is aved it. i had silicone and my mind wandered to wonder if silicone would hold in the electrical current! This thread wasnt to ask if i should use this heater, it was to ask if silicone was able to hold in any electrical current! it was random, i know..... but that is how my brain works.

Why in the world don't you contact the thermometer company & see if they'll replace. Tell them the situation & that the IFS won't replace it, will they? Anyone who works with glass/pyrex knows that not all glass is annealed properly & that would be the only reason it cracked on you unless you yourself did something like bang it accidently or pull it out of the water while it was still turned on. In the meantime I'd get a new one so you aren't delayed in setting up your tank unless you want to wait. It might all work out to your advantage to do so.

wanna find out the conductivity of silicone.. get two wires, strip both ends of both and dip one end of each into silicone and let it dry.. then plug the 2 bare (un-siliconed) ends into a wall socket and put the 2 siliconed ends up to your tongue.. a perfect test..
this will tell you how well it will hold current!
