simulating the ocean

I know that in the ocean, water is constantly moving and plankton are being pushed around and if this didn't happen, the water and animals would not do as well. How do you create these currents in your tank and what is a skimmer. I know there are filtration systems, skimmers and possibly a "water circulator" but what are these and are they all necessay? Thanks for all the help.

there are wave makers which will turn the water like a ocean useing power heads a skimmer removes waste(poop etc) from the water.PLankton you can add to feed corals etc. As for filter the best is Live rock which is a natural filter system. Yes I would say you need a skimmer and Live rock filter though you can get by with out I like to do what is best for the tank and makes my life easier. So the better the set up the better off you will be .

Although that last post was very informative, it may have been a little misleading. A skimmer and LR are both a must if you are trying to simulate the ocean ecosystem. A skimmer uses microbubbles to attach to the protein in the water and extracting it into a cup that is emptied on a regular basis. LR is rock with living organisms and bacteria colonies that naturally break down harmul chemicals and detrius in the tank. You can also add a HOB (Hang On Back) filter, canister filter or an overflow to a sump/fuge or wet/dry system. To learn more about these systems, search the boards on what is right for your setup.
As for water circulation, you will need to add multiple powerheads to your tank to help circulate water. In order for the LR to work correctly, you will need adequate water flow over it and no dead spots (standing water) in the tank.
