Size of sections in sump.

I am going to use a 55g (48 x 12.5 x 18) for my sump.
I want to set up a skimmer section (which will be Octopus nw-200),
then my fuge with a sand bed, and then a return section (Quiet One 4000).
How big of sections would I need?
What I need to know is how big should the fuge be to be effective? How deep?

The size of each section all depends on how deep you want your water level to be. Check to see the foot print of the skimmer and its required water depth and then go from there. I'd try to make the refugium section as big as possible to that you can have enough room for all of the things that you might what to put in it. For the return, once again check the dimensions of the pump and then go from there.

Thanks,
I have those (unfortunately not right off hand), but I guess what I was wondering is how deep should my fuge section be? I am planning on my baffles being about 9" because my skimmer has optimal operation from 8 to 10". Will 9" be deep enough?

For the fuge I would do about 16" baffles for that. Then for the skimmer 9" should be fine. But if you choose to do 16" baffles for the fuge and 9" for the skimmer you would have to switch the skimmer section and fuge because one baffle is taller than the other so water will not flow over as it is supposed to.
