If you having trouble deciding upon a protein skimmer, and your friend has a Skilter 250 available - you can try it. Just don't get your hopes up too much. They are wonderful powerfilters for small tanks, but the Skimmer feature in my opinion is marketing hype.
I've owned one - the 250 - and it sort of skims - sort of.
If you are interested - do a search on this board for Skilter 250 and you'll find many posts discussing this unit.
You must tinker with it, it's loud, and well ..... not my favoite piece of equipment.
Others seem to like them though.
2 black percs, firefish, purple firefish, longnose hawkfish, 2 green chromis
IMO - 7 fish - although many are small - is a heavy fish load for a 30 gallon tank.
A good protein skimmer may do you're water good.
Later ;)

I have a skilter 250 on my 10gal. works Good but was to noisy, so I modified it with air stone and disconnected the venturie turbo part. I have a seaclone in my 125, but just bought the nautilus te., was told that the seaclone was only good for a tank about 50 gal or less.
IMO.

I also have a skilter 250, I dont like it. It seems like it is not working properly, or that i have a tank with a relly good system that doesnt need the skilter. I also have a fluval power filter in my 55 gallon tank. I was wondering how you attached a airstone to your filter to make it work better for you? It just seems that my skilter isnt bubbling up enough into the tray. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

I have a skilter 250 on a 29 gallon tank that works great after I let it run for a few weeks. It doesnt put out as many bubbles as it used to either. Its a FOWLR system, that is doing great after 3 months.

I myself have the skilter 400 on my 30gallon..the filter part works great, however the skimmer part is kinda crappy IMO throws alot of little bubbles into the tank..my plan is to get a prizm skimmer here soon..

I HATE my Skilter. The filter works good, but the so-called protein skimming function is noisy and thowsa A LOT of bubbles into the tank. I don't know how well it performs as a proteins skimmer because my 50 gal is only a month old and I don't run the air on the skilter much -- it annoys me. I'll be investing in a real protein skimmer soon.
But then again, if it is free... hmmm some protein skimming may be better than none. Anyone know how the bubbles in the tank affect the critters?

My skilter 450 runs great on my 30g and I only run the skimmer at night because it's so noisy. The thing I do hate about it is that my LFS sold it to me for $89 and a few weeks later I found you could by them on the web for WAY cheaper. As long as I'm in this hobby I'll always have a sour taste in my mouth for getting hosed like that.
