Hi, I have a small 29 gal. tank that has fish and inverts but not corals. I want to venture into some "beginner" corals and need advice on filtration. All I have is an undergravel filter. Can you recommend a mechanical filter/skimmer product for a small aquarium. I have read about the "Skilter" but have heard that it is very noisy so I am not
interested in it. Any sugestions?

I have a skilter on my 30 reef and it doesn't make that much noise.... otherwise get the seaclone about 150 bucks... also you should get the live rock for the tank and also you might have to get rid of some fish because the corals need good clean water... also get rid of the under grnd filter,,,,, [

If you want SeaClone...you can get it cheaper than $150 from Petsolutions.com (got mine for $64.99 from them).

I started out with a Skilter 250 on my 55 gallon. Don't waist your money. I still got the Skilter on my tank, but its used as a power filter. I upgraded to the Cyclone Bak Pak II. It out works my Skilter 100 to 1. And its not no where near as loud.(The Skilter does have a loud skimming process.)

I have a skilter on my 30 and it isn't a good protein skimmer. It just wasn't designed very well. I made some adjustments on mine that helped. I added an air pump to create better bubbles for skimming. I also think you should ditch the undergravel filter it just isn't worth it. You might want to use a power filter like an emperer. Buy a seperate skimmer.
