I have never used one but I hear that they are pretty much useless as far as skimmers go.

Do a search on skilter filter on this board, or I can save you the trouble, the overwhelming opinion is that it would be wiser to save your money for somthing else.

For a little more than the cost of the Skilter you can get other skimmers that would kick its butt. The Prizm by Red Sea from whatr I hear work wel on small and medium sized tanks and you can find them as low as $69 on the internet. YOu can also find one on this site that is $79 it is a skimmer and mechanical filter al in one. I have no experience with it but I would bet it is alot better than a Skilter. Do your research, with this hobby if it is cheap it normally works the same way.

I tend to agree with the above, many people have just taken a loss and actually thrown them into the trash. I personally know two "real life" people that have thrown them in the garbage in disgust, and many online claim to have done the same.

Um... dieregard all of the above. I have a shiny Skilter400 in the box for sale :D I'll even give you a great "Deal"!
Actually, the skimmer portion of a skilter in stock form is ineffective. There are modifications you can do to it (found online) that supposedly can make it a poor skimmer atleast. For a skimmer, don't even consider it. As a powerfilter, its good. But theres no difference between powerfilters IMO. All of them just pump water through a disposable filter element.
