Local LFS has a combination filter/protien skimmer. The cheaper one is rated filter 100 gallon and skim 125 gallon. Anyone ever heard/seen/used one of these?? If they work it sure beats a 150$ skimmer.

The protein skimmer IMO doesnt work very well i have the skilter 400 and just use the filter part..The filter part of it works very well..If your looking for a protein skimmer i would get something better i am still looking for a skimmer...HTH

My LFS sold me one with my setup for $89. It has worked well and I even got the skimmer to pull some crud out of the water. It is very LOUD however. Plus, I found them on the internet for $49 later which bothered me. It's a good filter for a new person to the hobbie. Mine is going to go on Tuesday when my new Prizm comes in.

As stated, these make great filters, but the skimmers are junk.Save your money and get a real skimmer...I also made the mistake of being talked into one of these when I started, but now I know better. Most "combo" filters are just junk...Remember,,,CHEAP stuff aint good,And GOOD stuff aint cheap...

Ok guys thanks alot for the answer. I was kind of wondering why a good skimmer sells for 150+ and the skilter 400 is basically a whisper filter with a skimeer on it. Thanks

I had a skilter for a while. I used it mostly as a filter, like the others stated. It did manage to get a fair amount of junk out of the tank, but it also put a lot of bubbles in the tank!

I just started a tank a little while back and thought the Skilter 400 would be a good way to go, but my advice is to get something else. They make an awful lot of noise. I'm already looking for something else.

I also bought a skilter 400. Luckily I got it for $50 bucks. They make good filters and the protien skimmer works OK for the cost. Depending on the size of your tank and what your wanting to keep. To make them less noisy, actually silent, all you have to do is get an air pump and wooden air stone. Drill a whole in the top of the plastic lid big enough to put the hose through. Then drop the stone in the whole and your good to go.

the skilter is worthless if you intend on using it for a skimmer. High maintenance low production, if your looking for a good skimmer try the sea clone, usually can get them on internet for about 69.00 dollars

I use the skilter 250 on a 10 gal, It was very loud, but I disconnected the venturi, and installed a wood/airstone, and air pumpt, it works much better, I got plans off the net that uses a camera film container (plastic) to put the airstone in, i don't run it after additives are added, but I let it run overnight. and it pulls out a wet coffee color liquid. the Bakpak at my LFS is 160 dollars, the skilter was $60. The bakpak may outperform the skilter to make up for the cost difference.
