Skimmer and a refugium

Is it necessary to run a skimmer with a refugium?
And if you do, do you skim prior to the water going into the fuge or do you skim the water after it exits the fuge?

I always try to run skimmers on the rawest, most untreated water possible -that is, directly from the tank. So...I would skim before the refugium.

you shold run the skimmer before the fuge.
The skimmer will clean out most of the crap of your tank, the fuge will help you to mainain low natraite and will be a good place to grow copepods.

thanks for the help!
One more question, with the increased amount of pods (i have even been told you can possibly have misis grow) in the fuge does this reduce the amount of food you use to feed your fish

Some of the fish will eat only on pods, like mandarin goby.
The amount of pods that you will have will compensaid on the amount of feeding.
How big of a tank?

45 gallon, if you have misis shrimp growing in the fuge then that will feed just about all the inhabitants, or atleast reduce the amount of food you have to feed
