If you have a skimmer around you can certainly use it, but your average nano with enough LS and LR is capable of dealing with the bio-load.
I guess this matter, which comes up all the time here, has to do with what your ideology is with regard to this hobby. Most people tend to lean to one side or the other with respect to biological v. mechanical filtration. Either you're creating a tank with a sump/skimmer combo with a BB or very little substrate, or you're creating a refuge with a DSB and >1 lbs LR per gallon. All attempt to control the same thing: bioload, but both attempt to do it in different ways. No rights, and no wrongs, some pros, and some cons. The skimmer would work, the LR and LS would work, and a combination of both will work. Heck I've read that people still use undergravel filters for God sake!
Good luck and keep us posted when you get the chance.
