Skimmer going nuts.....

I just put some Aragocrete base rock in my tank last night. To guard against an ammonia spike I put an ammonia blocking-infused media pad into my trickle filter at the same time...
At the time I bought the media I was thinking about the fact that my nitrate load was pretty well handled by my rock-filled sump, big fuge, phosban reactor with bio-pellets, and the penguin cartridge in my overflow box. So I bought the ammonia control media for a rainy day...
The owner of the LFS said that the base rock was going to spike my ammonia level, so I put the media into use....
Well, my skimmer is now going ballistic. Set at the very lowest air-flow it is filling the cup in under 5 minutes. Is it the aragrocrete or the filter media causing this? I just shut it off for now. I can't possibly keep dumping it as fast as it's filling up. Anyone else experience this? Is it normal? Should I leave the skimmer off for a few days??
