skimmer help

I have a wet/dry system on a 65gl tank. The chamber where the water comes into the system houses a skimmer. There is not much room in this chamber and the skimmer is not working. I even put a larger pump in but I can not get it to pull enough to foam at top.
Any ideas on what it could be ? If I need to replace this skimmer it would have to be something that would fit in the section of the sump or hang on the outside or something !
Right now my tank is sitting at home with no skimming !

I will have to get some pics, but it is a cheapo evidentally. The chamber is sits in is about 4" wide and 8" deep. It basically is a circular thing with a tube coming out the side for a powerhead. That's it ! I did not really understand how a simmer works when I first got it and I don't think it has ever actually foamed out of the top. I don't know how I have not had problems in my tank with such a piece of crap. The guy at my LFS has taken it home to try and rig it or do something to make it skim, but he seems befuzzled !
I am wondering if someone makes a small one that I can put in sump or maybe hang on the side or something !
