skimmer only?

Who thinks that just a skimmer would be fine for tanks between 55-90 gallons. Instead of a skimmer and maybe a power filter w/bio wheel together. Maybe add some live rock to just the skimmer set up to add a little more filteration. (Is a skimmer a better form of filteration than a power filter?) Any comments would be appreciated.

In a balanced reef system reguardless of size, protein skimmers with LR and LS are all that is necessary to keep a good reef. Its all I've used for in my reef, I dont use any mechanical or chemical filtration in my tank.

If you are going to use just a skimmer for filtation in that size of a tank, it won't be enough filtration . Besides the skimmer you would need 1 to 1.5 lbs of live rock per gallon and a deep sand bed.
Skimmers break down waste matter before it can break down into nitrates.
Powerfilters break down this same matter into nitrates which have to be exported by some other means - plants such as calaurpa, or water changes.
If you are not going to use the appropriate amount of live rock and sand, than I suggest using a powerfilter and skimmer combination.
