Pros - less equipment, less energy, more natural (if you're in to that sort of thing), more food in the water column to feed the filter feeders/corals.
Cons - more water changes required, potentially less clean water, potential for algae outbreaks.
It all depends on what form of filtration you replace the skimmer with. It can be done, many do it skimmer-less.

If you go skimmer-less then you should use a large sump but it all depends on bio-load the more bio-load the more filtration you need. But if you don't feed as much you wouldn't need it.

A good skimmer is a good investment IMO.
Takes fish poo out of water -- smell the cup once.. it's poo

a skimmer does what crashing waves do in the ocean. The waste is then washed onto to the shore and the clean water returns back into the ocean. Same concept is used with a skimmer. I have gone without a skimmer for 2 years with no problems. I did so water changes more often and did notice my water wasnt as clear as it used to be when the skimmer was running. If you have a noisey skimmer maybe you should replace the motor and not the skimmer. or use a foam pad beneath the skimmer and motor if in a sump tank. If your motor is placed out side of the sump then Dynamat your tank stand.
Dynamat 10455 Xtreme Bulk Pack 9 Sheets fpr about $140.
Kit contains nine 18" x 32" pieces of Dynamat Xtreme
Apply Dynamat Xtreme to your vehicle's resonant surfaces and enjoy improved clarity, loudness and bass response from your car stereo.
Dynamat Xtreme is coated with aluminum for high temperature areas such as firewalls and floors.
Dynamat Xtreme is also recommended for trunk lids, roofs, quarter panels and under-hood installations.

there will always be a skimmer in my tanks. i just dont see any reason not to have one. even a crappy skimmer will pull stuff out of the water that could cause harm.

Thats a good idea
I would try it the only down side is it may hold more heat in being a reflective surface.

Honestly I think it's a personal choice if you do or don't, but you really haven't stated why your against running a skimmer? What skimmer do you currently have? If your diligent as far as water changes(very frequent) it might work, but an ounce of prevention is worth the investment IMO. I wouldn't go skimmerless unless I could constantly flush my system continuously with fresh sea water.....

I know that some people do operate a tank without one, so yeah they are not an absolute necessity but IMHO the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I am reminded of why I use one everytime I clean out the collection cup-that's some nasty stuff there that I really don't want in the water column! I have used my Seaclone skimmer for years and it still works great-very cheap, but does requires regular cleaning.
