Skimmer or not?

Okay, this might seem to be kind of a dumb question, but I am fairly new to SW and I am reading the threads, but...and here we go:
I have a 55g that is going to be a RT. Do I really need a skimmer or sump?

The tank is 36x18x20 as in wxdxh
It is not drilled.
I am intending to put HOB filtration on it.
Please help me with this.

no you dont absolutly need a skimmer or sump. tanks can be successful without them. both are rather nice to have for their various reasons. but you can run HOB filtration and use your waterchanges and filter cartrige cleaning as your only forms of nutrient export.

If you plan on doing a reef tank I would recommend it. They can be a good bit of money, but well worth what they clean out of the water column.
