Skimmer questions

Hello all - brand new to the forum and looking for some answers. Been running a 55 gal reef tank for some years and am planning to go bigger this summer. Already bought the new 120 gal tank, stand and canopy. Been doing some research before buying new equipment and have a few questions concerning skimmers. I've been told more than a few times that you cannot "over skim" a tank, ie if you can afford a skimmer for a 500 gal tank it is ok to use it on my 120. However, I've just read saltwater.com's steps for setting up a reef tank and they state that you want to get the size skimmer rated for your tank, or else you might destroy some of the bacteria, etc.necessary for a healthy filtration system. So, I'm looking at purchasing the AquaC -EV150 rated for 180 gal. Is this OK, too big, too small??? Also this leads to another question - assuming you have the correct sized skimmer, do you want to have it operational 24 hrs per day???? Thanks in advance for all replies.

I personally don't believe in this "overskimming" rule.I have a CPR SR9 on my 130 setup. That skimmer is rated for over 300 gallons.I run it 24/7 for three months now and see no harm. Everything in the tank is thriving.

Depends on the type of livestock. Some corals and filter feeders can benefit from microorganisms floating in the water colomn, overskimming is possible in this respect or in a tank that contains gorgians(not recommended) or goniporas(not recommended).
Otherwise it isnt actually harmful, I don't recommend overskimming myself because I like to keep some 'marinesnow' present in the tank.
