Skimmer setup - test

I have a Euro-Reef skimmer that I've never used. I set it up in a 20 gal tank to test it. How far up the chamber should the water come? I can adjust that with the 'air intake control valve and the 'foam level adjuster pipe'. But I have no idea what either of those things actually do. Also, there is no foam, I'm pretty sure that's because the water is clean. Any setup pictures or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to the site.
All skimmers need to break in. Set the bubbles just before the neck of the skimmer, when you start seeing foam (about 2 days) keep an eye on it so it won't over skim and fill up the cup with mostly water, if it does that turn it down and empty the cup. Once it starts getting a really nice foam adjust it so the foam goes up the neck and almost bubbles at the top..again keep an eye on it. adjust it as you see it needs it to make skim.
You want bubbles to pop at the top from foam but not a steady flow of froth overfilling the cup. You will have to tweak it and find that good spot but it isn't hard.

EuroReef good quality skimmers...Good performers.....pricey back in the day though. Are you running the skimmer in fresh or saltwater? As Flower suggest does take a bit to break in, but I would run the water line at this point at the connection point on the body of the skimmer where it transitions to the neck....

It's the Euro-Reef RS 135. It will be in saltwater. It's been running for 24 hours in a 20 gallon tank of clean fresh water. So I'm not expecting any foam. I've had it new in the box for a few years, and I'm finally setting up my tank again. With the air valve and foam adjustment open, the water rises to the neck. Thetas also where the outlet overflow point is. I guess I'll need to wait until I have everything set up to experiment with the settings. Thanks.

Freshwater run isn't bad to get the residual oil from production off the inside....You had mentioned about your water height adjustment on the skimmer.....I'd start the skimmer off midway between the gray transition piece that connects the skimmer body to the cone portion of the skimmer for 48-72 hours of salt run....Then after that I would slowly adjust the water height inside the skimmer to around the union connection between the skimmer body and collection cup.....
