Skimmer vs. Canister

i guess what im trying to get at with this post is simple. do you really need a skimmer and a canister filter? can you get away with one or the other? im debating an upgrade to a 75 gal or a 125. The setup will be FOWLR at first. maybe reef later. can anyone suggest a good brand for either option? thanks!

They do different things. A skimmer IMO is a must-have item, whereas if you've got a lot of LR and LS a canister really isn't needed.
The best kind of filtration for a 75 or 125g is a sump/fuge. A fuge to grow macro algaes, and a sump to keep all of your equipment in.
