I have a skilter 250 "power filter ans skimmer all in one" in my 55g plus I have a aqua tech power filter and I don't think my skimmer is working "there is stuff on it but I don't think I'm getting a good work out" I was thinking about a seaclone skimmer is there anyone here with one of those, or what should I do, thank you for your time.

The 250 is not a good choice even to filter a 55,much less to use as a skimmer. I hope your fish store didn't reccomend this setup. If so,find a new fish store. Can't help you on the other question, but I can verify that the Skilter 250 is worthless on a 55gallon tank.....STEVE

Hi,
SeaClone's are the biggest pieces of crap you will ever come across (except for maybe Skilters). Have a look at ETS, Turboflotor, or CPR, or EuroReef skimmers they are much better.

Tom

There are way too many ignorant LFS clerks around. When we first started the 2 skimmers they recommended were the seaclone and the skilter go figure. thank god for the internet for great advice.

I agree with Tom the seaclone and skilter are junk. Invest in a good one now so you wont have to pay later.

A friend gave me a Skilter 250 he didn't want anymore. I use it on a 15 gallon QT cause it was free and I was putting the tank together cheap. It works fine for a power filter, but in my opinion that "skimmer" is a marketing ploy. It is not an efficient skimmer. On my 55 gallon tank I have a CPR Bak-Pak II and it does what I feel is a good job. It is a hang on the back type unit, that I eventually hung on side of sump. It's like most equipment ~ tank load, budget, your own personal experience and talk to others that really know. Ususally ya get what ya pay for, and my skilter was free

The turboflotor is great i have one and love it..........you can make your own sump just do a search on the net for DIY sump there are tons of ideas out there you will need to buy an overflow unless your tank is drilled. the overflows seem to start at 80 bucks and go on up.

The turbo is a good skimmer or the berlin but as far as rio pumps go I will never buy another one. I had one blow on my skimmer one time and it gave off a nasty chemical odor that was everywhere. Apparently when it blew it stopped pumping water but continued to melt down inside. My mushrooms, xenia and some polyps all shrunk and almost died. I through two poly filters in the sump and everthing eventually recovered. Thank God it happened during the day or it may have killed my tank. By the way the pump was only 7months old.
