What exactly is a skimmer? what does it do?? do I need one right away, or can I hold off on a for a bit?

IMO most important piece of equiptment on a tank.. it basically cleans all of the fish waste out of your water keeping the water clean for corals and fish.. without it your tank levels would be through the roof and thats not good..
