skimmers

i have a 30- gallon tank and am planning on adding a skimmer soon but im not sure when to add it. i know its not good to add it too early or to add it too late. Whats a good time to add it?

After the cycle is compleatly over.That is,when the ammonia and nitrates are at zero,and have been for a week or two.It also depends on the ammount of fish you have in the tank.If there is little or no load on the bio system,there will be little or nothing to skim. One clue that you need one is an oily looking film on the surface of the water.Another is when the nitrates seem to be rising steady.

I did lots of research before buying my new skimmer... the names that came up over and over again with good recommendations (for a 58 gallon) were the Aqua C Remora Pro and the CPR Bak Pak. Ended up with the Bak Pak just because that's what the LFS carried.
