Nano tanks are great, you just have to be more careful/aware of what's going on in your tank.
Have fun with it, and to super extra slow.

if it is a brand new setup, add 15-20 pounds of live sand, 20 pounds of live rock, and a small powerhead. Wait a few weeks before you add anything else at all. the tank must cycle first. If you do add something, fish or coral or crabs etc, the chance of it living is very slim. small tanks are hard to keep stable, so go slow. also, research research research.

i'll be doing a lot of research, can some tell me the equipment i'll need, will a filter be ok with a pwer head or will i need a skimmer. i was thinking about starting with either a 20 or 10-12 gallon tank

Good call on going a little larger, that will make it a tad easier on you. 25-25lbs of live rock and 20lbs of live sand is all the filter you will need in a tank that small. As for equipment goes, just a couple small powerheads and a heater will be all you need.

so i'm going to start a 20 gallon tank and take it slow, so it'll be like 2-3 months before i add any fish in. to start off im buying
20 gallon tank
heater
2 p0wer heads
marineland peguin bio-wheel filter
20 lbs. live sand
uncured 15lbs of live rock, (curing it through cycling process)
coralife 2x65 watt setup. sould i go for the single or double linear strip fixture, i want to be able to put some corals but am on a budget around $90
most of this stuff will be paid by my parents except the fish and lighting. i've had a 30 gallon freshwater tank since 3rd grade, now in highschool, i know this will be really different from that, but i think i can handle it.

all sounds good. I would really try for a little more rock, and maybe eliminate the biowheel. you dont really need it. that light should work fine.

if I were to add anything it would be a skimmer and that is really not a must. other than that I would say you are good.
