Smell when curing live rock?

I'm starting up a 180g tank, FOWLR. I'm wavering between purchasing cured LR vs uncured. I would cure the stuff in my tank, which is in my family room. Is the smell really, really bad?
IOW is that a really, really bad idea?

Unless you get it from your LFS tanks, its not going to be cured. I really don't know why onlines sellers call it cured because you still have to cure it. I just bought some and it was only 1.99 a pound.

Yeah I would go with the uncured if u buy it online. Do you have a cover for your tank? That would help. I got some bad live sand that did not smell good at all. I had not done my research and went ahead and put it in my tank. It had a smell for a week. When you get your precured live rock and live sand make sure if it smells rotten u call or e-mail where you got it from and tell them, do not stick it in your tank.

Each time I bought online, it came from the island source (Fiji twice and Florida aquacultured once) wrapped in newspaper with lots of die-off potential. The smell was pretty bad all three times (45 or 50lb boxes). The Florida aquacultured wasn't as bad and more life survived. I used a large Rubbermaid tub in the laundry room.
Mine subsided after about two weeks and 3 or four water changes. I also ran two skimmers full time and no lights for the first week. After that, I used light sparingly to salvage some corals and the halemeda (sp?)and sargassum that I found on it. Can't remember how long it took to cure, but what lived was nice.
The Fiji rock was very raw stuff and stunk from the box. It also sat for a day in Fed X's warehouse lost.
Have fun. I'm still finding new things on mine and it's old.
