Smoking around the tank

Random question -- do you permit people to smoke in the area of the tank? As my wife and I live in a one-bedroom apartment, and she smokes, this has become something of a hot topic in our household.

That will not harm the tank.It will although harm you and her...The tank should be the least of your worries as far as her smoking goes. Yes,I also smoke. So I guess that makes me a hypocrate, but a well edjucated one.(did I spell edjucated wrong???)

i am also a smoker, but i have my tanks ina large office- 1500sq/ft open plan space, i also have ceiling fans on 24hrs and keep the doors open whilst smoking.
i have heard various opinions with regards to smoking and i feel that as long as you dont smoke in the immediate area or directly blow into the tank! you shouldnt have a problem.just my opinion.

Believe me Mr. Salty, I know more about nicotine and cigarettes than you could shake a cancerstick at. Unfortunately, as you know, it takes more than knowledge to kick the habit. I do know that many of the chemicals suspended in cigarette smoke will absorb into tap water. I would suspect that saltwater is slightly less absorbtive. I'm relieved to hear that you've found that the smoke has no effect on the tank's inhabitants.

Smoking around your tank will destroy the tank over the period of a couple of years. Slowly the smoke and its contents build up in the system and causes everything to die. Studies show, (as always) somethings are effected a little faster than other but in the end it will bring about the end of your tank.
Well I'm not really sure if any of that is true, but I figured it might help kick the habit if you love your tank as much as I do.
Good luck to ya!

What studies, where can I read them?? I smoke everyday, many times a day right next to my tank while I am on the 'puter.Never seen any trouble,or heard of problems...If you make a statement like that, you should suppy the source of your info...

the contents of a cigarette are primarily organic, wouldn't the smoke that winds up in the tank be assimilated like any other waste??
So why won't filter carbon and a skimmer take care of it?

My wife and I both smoke and during all my fishkeeping days I have seen no adverse effect on the fish. I just wish they would buy their own smokes and quit buming from us.

Too Funny Pufferlover. My husband and I do not smoke. We do not let anyone smoke in the house. Who ever smokes is more then welcome to step out front or back to light up. I guess my fishy's are non-smokers. :D

I dont let people smoke in my apartment usually.
When I first got my fish tank I was so paranoid i didnt let anyone smoke near it at all.
Now if I have a whole bunch of people over, i will occasionally let people smoke inside.
Just dont let anyone ash in it and your fishies should be just fine.
I mean, they never get to party and i dont let mine drink beer, so some occasional nicotine is a little treat for them.
:D :D :D :D

I have read some articles about smoke possibly causing adverse affects on a tank.@knight as far as the composition of a cigarette being mostly organic it is but the burning of anything changes that to hazardous chemicals which are released into the air or your lungs.

Speaking of which, I wonder if there are any substances you can add to the water to get fish "high." Cats have catnip, and I've seen dogs get stoned. It doesn't seem fair that fish get left out.

LOL!! I don't really have anything to comment on this subject except that was extremely funny Fat_Ed. I was deeply humored...lol. Fritos...lol! I guess I could add something...I'm a smoker but I will not smoke around my fish or anything living or non inside my home...I hate the smell. I go outside, but I also live in Texas. That means in December it's still about 90 degrees outside. Ok...maybe not 90...let's say 85...hehe. ;) For those of you in Canada...ha...good luck. And Sammy actually put forth a very good point even though he was trying to be funny...have you ever seen bong water; it's disgusting. Yes, you're not smoking directly through your fish tank water, but I'm sure it has SOME effect. Everything is affected by smoke, why not your fishies too? I wouldn't drink bong water...would you?

smoking apparently releases nicotine sulfate which can kill fish but this is diluted in the air so amounts are minimal. i guess if you were a chronic smoker who hovers over there tank it might be a problem but otherwise i would worry more about the emissions problems around the world, which would affect a tank more. nice to see so many people use bongs!!!

I once saw a guy blow smoke(not from a cigarette)into an airstone on an oscar tank. They don't eat more, they just swim sideways. Before anyone has a fit, this was MANY years ago, and if I saw it happening again today, I would not think it was as funny as I did at the time. Then again, I thought everything was funny back then ;) It was even funnier seeing the owner of the tank chasing the guy that did it, when he thought the fish were dying. No fish were harmed in the process of this stupid stunt. They all got old and huge, last I heard.
