Snakes display refugium build

So with all of this talk about display fuges, I'm considering adding a ten gallon fuge to my system.
List of materials:
Ten gallon
Glass hole saw bit
1" bulkhead
pvc plumbing
rio 1100 pump (check)
canopy
lights from my scrubber
aluminum foil
sand
macroalgaes
critters

Benefits I am seeking:
More stable water parameters
Additional water volume
Sand for denitrification
Something to watch when my display lights are out
Producing various microfaunas
Another challenge. :)

I will be gathering materials together in the next few weeks. I just wanted to go ahead and start the thread so that I can post pics and change my lists as needed. I might pick up the tank today. I'll order a hole saw bit and a bulkhead tomorrow with permission. Lol

Lol, yeah, I know, I know.
The aluminum foil I am going to use to create some kind of reflective surface in the canopy for the lights.
I'm also going to need a can of black spray paint to paint the bottom, and two sides to keep some of the light from reaching my display tank.
The canopy is going to be simple, and made out of some cheap plywood that I have leftover.

Let me give you an old timer’s tip. Scrap the aluminum foil pick up a roll of wide reflective tape at any Home depot or Lowes

Yeah, there's that too. I've used reflective tape in the past as well. Both would work fine.
I'm thinking that since it is a 10g fuge that two 23w CFL light bulbs would do the trick.

I'm also thinking about adding some sand to the fuge. A 10g is only 12" tall at max, so if I do a four inch deep sand bed, it will allow some denitrification and allow me 8" of room to grow macro. If not 4" then one and a half to two inches of sand would be good enough for nassarius snails and other various organisms.
I don't sleep very well, and I think that having a display fuge would let me watch something when the lights are out on my display tank to calm me down and get me tired enough to go to sleep.
Thanks for the tip though, Joe.

I didn't sleep very well either... and it's all your fault. I couldn't get my mind to shut off and quit thinking about my upcoming SW build. Haaa thus why you got innudated with PM's today. :)

After all our talking about plumbing yesterday when I closed my eyes... all I could see is white pipe shaped snakes squiggling everywhere trying to confuse me.

HAHA. You're funny Mr. Wolf.
Anyways, I don't think I'm going to be able to get a 10g today unless I go by walmart today or something. I know I have to go get some groceries today. I don't want to starve this coming week. Right now I'm at the local university with my wife while she does school work. That's the reason I'm able to post so quickly on everyone's threads. LOL. When I'm at home it takes so freakin' long to load a page and if I'm on my iPhone it takes me forever to type anything.
I'm thinking the extra water volume is going to help my tank tremendously. I'm thinking of even adding a small heater to the fuge to help keep the temp stable. Maybe adding a remote sand bed to the system will help it overall.

Yep. Happened to me many nights. Mise well get used to it. After this long, I worry less about my tank and more about being a dad. LOL

Am I missing something here you are going to connect your refuge to you DT? The only reason you would add another heater is that the redundancy would give you a safety net if one of the heaters went out. With your idea of rapid flow through the refuge the utilization of one heater in the refuge to keep that temp stable makes no sense to me

Yeah, redundancy and the fact that my heater is rated only for a 20g tank. I think the additional heater will help.
