Snakes?

Hey guys and gals,
I was wondering what you all thought of different types of pet snakes? What is a good beginner snake? What's an advanced pet snake?
I was considering getting a pet Ball Python. Do they make good pets? I want something kind of active - something you can take out of the cage and handle every day.
I only have a place for a 20 gallon aquarium, but I know I will have more space in a year or so.
Help please!

Yeah, I had a boa awhile back. I had to give him up because of a move. I'm wanting to get back into keeping snakes. Don't know how my wife is going to handle this :D :D

Well neither a boa nor any other kind of snake is going to be comfortable in a 20 gallon tank. Ball pythons grow to several feet.

I got a rubber boa.. but he can't live in temps over like 75F (80F=death from what I understand) LOL... easiest snake to keep on earth. I got him in a sterlite tub (no heat, no light, carefresh+hiding places+waterbowl) and feed him 4 pinkies every 3 weeks. Doesn't bite, stays in one place for long periods of time, small, slow moving.... but good luck finding one. He's so undemanding that its sometimes easy to forget I have him.
A rosy or sand boa would be a good candidate for a 20long.
BTW I wouldn't really consider any nocturnal snake active during the time of the day that you'll most likely interract with it... except for a few diurnal snakes.

Ball pythons are good pets, I have 3, however, just consider the commitment involved in getting snakes. They will live 15-30 yrs, depending on how good you take care of them. Its a big commitment. You'll have to think of your life and how will having a snake fit in to it for period of time.
At the point that you are serious, then spend a lot of time research the snake's needs, etc., before finally running out and getting one.

Sep, I know that a ball is too small to keep in a 20 gallon. I just really want one. If anything, it would be a corn snake. :D Then again, corn snakes do get long too.
Rotary, lol, wish I could find a rubber boa. They sound pretty cool.
Beth, That's awesome that you have three ball pythons! I really should examine my life at this point and figure if I am stable enough for such a commitment. You're right!
I was thinking about getting just a cute corn snake for the time being. Seems like it's the best starter snake. Thoughts?

you can keep a ball in a 20 for a while. mine was in a 10 at first, and now a 30 L.
they are very peaceful and not aggresive snakes. easy to care for.

Sure, but are they good starter snakes?

Iv'e had a ball python for years, in a 55. But she stays under a fake rock in one corner almost 99% of the time
. So I think a smaller tank would be fine. As far as being active, you are not going to get much out of them. About the only reason I keep holding onto this ball is b/c my kid's school asks me at least once a year to bring her up there. It's always fun watching the excitment in their eyes as some of them hold a snake for the first time.
As far as the wife, that's usually a problem. Mine won't let me bring her home, so she's stays in my office at work...

snake, yea i would say so. she was my first snake. just do your research first, figure out how you will feed her.
and yea t316, i have had mine for about 8-9 years and now the current GF is so freaked out by snakes, and even worse, rats, that she cant stand the sight of it. so the snake sits in a room with the door closed. i should probably get her a new home...

I offered to give mine away on here not too long ago to a school teacher (can't remember who it was) that started a thread about looking for a classroom pet.

thing is, in the right circle mine should be worth about 200. a decent sized 8 year old female that is very pretty. normal genetics. some people go nuts with breedings special mutations and some were selling at $50,000! but most were 1-2k ->20k

There should be no question in your mind when considering such a accusation. I can not stress this enough. And you have to consider your life now, and your life in the future. You also need to have the ability to care for the animal correctly, and, frankly, fish tanks are poor choices for snakes.

Beth, I'm sorry, I wasn't too detailed on what I said in my last post. I WANT ONE, it's whether or not I want to make my wife mad at me.
I bought a ball python today. My wife doesn't like it, but she's fine now. She's not too upset. I played with him for a little while this evening and made his cage. I've read a lot about balls before I bought him, and I KNOW that I can take care of him. He's so cute! About a foot and a half long. Still eats pinkies.
So - name suggestions? I've come up with Rufus, Leroy, Bob, Jimmy, and confucious :D
