Snowflake Eel saving his food??

I just bought a Snowflake Eel today. He is about 20 inches long. After we put him in the tank, we tried to feed him. He took some sand eels right from my hand. That was cool - so I thought. A couple of hours later - I noticed a pile of Sand Eels behind a rock. Is he savinging his food for later? Doesn't like it??? I don't want to leave the pile of food in there for long - but if he is saving it for later.....
Thanks
