snowflake eels

I was thinking about getting a snowflake. What other types of fish can be kept with them? Are they a very hardy fish?

Most say that only aggressive fish can be kept with snowflakes. Such fish are triggers, puffers, lionfish, wrasses, sharks, and rays. I don't really know about sharks and rays but you probably don't care about them anyway. I have a friend with a snowflake that is kept with a small marine betta and a sebae clown. I have heard they are pretty peaceful. Plus, they're blind as bats.

Yes Snows altho somewhat aggressive normally will not bother other fish as long as they don't fit in the eels mouth. The only bad rap they get is that when you feed they sometimes will swim around wildly and mistake a real fish for their food (their eyesight is almost nil). I try to have my eels food ready on the feeding stick so as soon as it shows I give it some food and it settles down while the others eat theirs.

Sowflake eels are awesome, We have one with our clowns, niger trigger, valintini puffer, porkfish and he never bothers anyone... I don't think you would regret getting one. I wish I could keep two, the lfs we shop at had a baby about the size of a pencil, it was so cute...Later Lisa

i agree with everyone about the poor eyesight thing, i had one a while back and decided to get rid of him because he is an invert eater and i wanted to get a cleanup crew.if you want to get or have snails or crabs steer clear of eels.they say of all eels the snowflake is the least agressive, they are beutiful animals and very fun to watch.also take into account your tank size because they grow to 36' inches.good luck!!!

p.s it is a real task to catch an eel if you have alot of rock for him to hide in.think about your long term goal before you put it in.

I have a snowflake eel and he is awesome!! He usually only has his head poking out but he still draws much attention to himself. When he does swim about he is a very pretty fish. It is true that they have rather bad eyesight but in turn they have an unbelievable sense of smell. If you get one, just don't hand feed it, use a feeding stick b/c they can easily get your fingers.
My eel is not aggressive whatsoever. I think it is important to keep them full so they don't gain an appetite for their tankmates. I feed mine once a day and it keeps him satisfied. Good Luck!!

I can't say for sure, but I have had a condylactus(sp?) anemone with my snowflake for quite a while and he has never acted interested in it at all. Again, I'm no expert but wouldn't an anemone sting the eel if he tried to eat it?? Maybe some of ya experts can help out here ;)

My eel is a moray eel. He is brown with white spots all over him...is that considered a snowflake or another breed?

i dont think a snow flake will eat anemones, when i said they would eat inverts, i meant crabs&snails, sorry for the confusion. i had a condylacyus in my tank at the same time as my snow flake and he never touched it .

Very hardy fish but you do have to watch what you put in the tank with them, I had a golden head sleeper goby (5in) in my 125 for about 2 weeks before I added the snowflake(20in) well he lasted 2 days, I guess he got hungry. Good Luck

Hey I have a snowflake and he is awesome, I love him to death, I also have a purple tip anenome and they seem to be doing fine, I was just wondering if silversides are a good meal for him, oh also for all of you getting a snowflake, use a feeding stick or long tweezers or something, they may look nice and sweet but it kinda hurts when they bite you on accident  well happy hobbying!

My snowflake has not attacked my Hermits, although if one gets in his way looking for food, he will toss them. Doesn't seem to hurt them and is pretty funny. I have had a peppermint shrimp and a sally go MIA tho... I do have a CBS that chases the snowflake from time to time and he also could have been the culprit. He ignores all food except for Brine Shrimp Plus which is frozen brine, mixxed with krill, and other goodies.
I am feeding by hand right now by letting the food go just before he gets to me. It seems to work ok. He tends to thrash the food making a big mess. Fun to watch.

Puppy,
Nope, just brown with white spots all over. Just like polka dots!!
He used to have a real problem with eating, but he now has the hang of it. He used to hang out on the bottom of the tank and was unable to catch the food. Now, he comes up to the top and gets it as soon as it falls in. He still has a bit of trouble finding it, but definately has made progress!!

I use to agree with the blind theory and snowflakes (or lack of sight) until I seen one at a lfs last week chase a goldfish around the tank step for step, move for move, turn for turn and eat him up in about 20 seconds. This was after going around the tank a couple times following right after him. Then he made a mad dash out and swallowed him down. I almost bought him just for his hardiness. The guy was big and he was a hunter. But for the most part all I have ever seen is the doofy looking non seeing guys. He wanted $70 for the eel and I told him he was nuts. But I truly have never seen a snowflake as keen as this one. Beats me, I still think most can't see or they're to lazy to worry about it.

goldfish; Just saw your earlier post where you are trying to figure out what eel you have. Just bought a 3rd eel last week same as you describe brown white spots all over and it is called a Golden Tail Moray eel and it did cost me 4 times what my snowflakes cost each. Altho called a Golden Tail it is just brown all over with the white spots or dots everywhere. It is quite a eater and altho I have not found a proper picture of it yet I have found its description on the net and it agrees with pet store name.
