They grow to 24 to 30 inches. Most books and sellers recommend no less then a 30 gallon tank. I have 2 one is now about 15 inches and the other is still a little baby about 6 or 7 inches (different tanks of course). They need rockwork to hide under or at least something they can get under even a piece of pvc pipe works well (my larger one has a piece about 8 inches long and he loves to be in it and stick his head out one end).

go for it! mine is 24". he is my favorite fish. hes in my 75 w/ a picasso trigger. i have a piece of pvc for him, he stays in it alot poking his head in and out. make sure you have a secure tank. they will get out if they can find a way. i think that having alot of good rockwork or pvc helps them stay in your tank, not on your floor. mine eats clams, squid, krill, some brine, and silversides. what other fish are in the tank? a 55 is prefect size for one of these. bo

Excellent point Grouper. Make sure there are no holes or else get ready to carpet surf at some point. I try never to feed my eels high up so they do not get the idea that food is up at the top. My big one tho has become a lot more daring tho as far as coming up when I start to feed and that does bother me since with my equipment there are a couple of openings in the back. My lfs keeps their eels in their top row of tanks with no lids at all and he claims he has never lost one yet (I find that very hard to believe) but he does keep the water level down in those tanks a few inches and said that makes the difference (again I find that hard to accept, but who knows).

yeah puffer, i always feed mine at the bottom as well, just so he doesnt find food at the bottom. mine will go on feeding streaks, hell eat for 3 days, then wont for 3 days. i know when hes hungry again because he will start swimming around at the top(worries me alot). i also always see him swimming around the top at night, it always worries me some. i have had him since march and never had a problem with him getting out. just make sure you cover everything. my hood came with a plastic board thing that slips on the glass and covers the back. bo

I like snowflake eels but I cant keep them in my tank, it has an over-flow built-in and the eel allways end in my sump.

I have had a snowflake eel for two years and have never had the top completely covered nor has he ever even tried to escape. Why is that?

Orby I think you have been lucky your has not try to get out, I would seal up your tank one day he will figure out there is a way out of the tank, my snowflake is about 20 in and he wants to eat everyday, and if he does not get his food he will go nuts, swimming all over the tank pushing the other fish out of the way. I have never heard of anyone complain about haveing a snowflake, I know you will enjoy yours. Good luck
