So apparently I'm really fat! Time for a weightloss blog!

And before any of you ask, no it's not the cupcakes! ;-)
So most of you know me as the cupcake selling, liberal rable rouser who likes to push buttons and start what I like to consider "political debate". Well, on a completely different note, I have decided that I need to lose about 80lbs, and also that I'm going to run a marathon 51 weeks from now in 2012. It's all explained wonderfully here in my blog
http://theclemsonkid.blogspot.com/
Basically if any of you out there have ever struggled, or are currently struggling with weight issues, I want you to be an active poster on my blog. Whether it's a "hey nice job", or a "put down the fork tubby", or maybe a tip or trick you have used in the past, I need all kinds of motivation to get going and hopefully be a success on this journey I'm about to begin.
Thanks to any and all who are a help, it means a lot to me!

Most women lose the 80lbs when they give birth. I wouldn't worry about it.

I lost 62 pounds over the course of the last year. I've kept it off too. Went from 272 to 210, and I hope to loose another 30 pounds this next year. I dropped 30 pounds in two months just by not drinking soda, milk, and juice. I just drink water, even when I eat out, and it has saved me a ton of calories.
It's hard to loose weight, but it's as simple as quit eating so much and start exercising more. The problem for me comes from appetite and satiation. You really got to look at how you gained the weight in the first place and then figure out how to change your habits. I lost the other 32 pounds just by not eating popcorn, coke and candy at the theater once a week. Imagine how much else I could loose by identifying a food and a habit and eliminating it?
Of course, I didn't really exercise or anything at all when I was loosing weight, but I didn't really feel any muscle loss while I was loosing fat either. But, you never know.
I don't know how much help it would be, but some of the people on BodyBuilding.com are very helpful and you can start your own weight loss thread over there too. They would probably give you more encouragement then what we can over here.
In fact, I think this thread has inspired me to dig up my old weight loss thread and keep it going. :D Thanks, Kid.

I've struggled with lardbuttery most of my life. I am better at knowing what to do than doing it. But the most helpful things I've learned is drink lots of water and remember, metabolism burns fat. Think of your metabolism like a fire. Fire needs heat, oxygen and fuel. In this case physical activity is heat and oxygen. Food is the fuel. Where a lot of people blow diets is the fuel part. Your body can go into starvation mode if you don't eat enough. If that happens you metabolize muscle before fat which drops a lot of weight, more than losing fat but.... Once you reach your goal weight you don't have enough muscle left to support a normal amount of calories so it's really easy to put weight back on fast. That's why so many people yo yo diet.
An early morning workout will get your metabolism going.
Eating 5 small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism stoked. Make sure to get a decent breakfast
All things being equal drinking lots of water will make you lose weight so doing it on a diet makes it even more effective.
Remember there are two sides to the results of a diet, pounds and inches. Just because you don't lose weight one week doesn't mean you did bad. Losing 11 pounds of fat while gaining 10 pounds of muscle looks like a 1 pound loss on a scale but you will see a big inch decrease somewhere and that 10 pounds of muscle is pure calorie burning mass instead of calorie storage.

The average man that regularly works out gains an average of 5 pounds of muscle in 3 months. You will see the scale move if you are doing it right. From what I have read, you will have to loose your fat first before you can adequately start gaining muscle.
The type of foods you eat are very important when you are trying to loose weight. The thing that made me loose a lot of weight without a whole lot of exercise was cutting out simple carbohydrates... sugar, high fructose corn syrup, desserts, (most of the time) lol. And then also limiting the amount of pasta, breads, casseroles and breaded/fried combos. Switch your oil to coconut oil or olive oil. Those low fat diets are crash diets - your brain needs fat, and is in fact made out of fat. If you stop eating so much fat in your diet, then you start to get depressed. Not my kind of diet. lol
I'm starting to realize the advantages of eating a diet high in protein and saturated fat. I am starting to eat a lot of deer meat, lean beef, chicken, turkey, tunafish, salmon, shrimp etc. I also am starting to wake up and cook two eggs in the morning with sausage or bacon and skip the toast/biscuit. Always have fruit or fresh veggies around the kitchen, so that when you get hungry for a snack, you can easily reach an apple instead of chips. Oh, and if you know it's not good for you - processed, surgary, boxed, canned, soda etc... don't allow it in your house. If you have to drive to the grocery to get the food you want, you probably aren't going to go get it. I gradually ate all of the food that I had on my shelf, instead of boxing it up and giving it away, and replaced it with good healthy food.
Also, start a recipe box with about 30 recipes that are healthy and quick to make. Use some of the same ingredients for most of them but learn how to cook them differently - that way you will always have something to cook and eat quick. Some of those meals should be ones you can take on the go - to work or school or whatever. If you got a microwave - even better. Finding 3-5 recipes that you can cook batches of, like soups, stews, and things of that nature - will give you the ability to freeze in single serving sizes and take it out for later ... ready to heat up.
All of those things allowed me to loose 62 pounds without exercising. In your case, wanting to run a marathon, you will be exercising, so you may need some extra complex carbs in your diet to keep from burning so much muscle when you run long distances. Start reading a good running magazine - they should have all kinds of tips and tricks in there to help you.
I'll keep tagging along!

I lost 60 pounds on Weight Watchers online. You eat whatever you want, just stay within the points they give you. Then calculate via an online gizmo (or purchase one of your own) that tells you how many points are in what food...for example my creamer is 1 point, so I remove that point from my allotted amount. Stay within the points, and you will lose 10 pounds a month painlessly without feeling like you are on a diet. They have points for those nursing and pregnant too.
They even have menus with points already added at Applebees and you can go online and fine the points values of anything on any menu...for those who like to eat out.
Weight Watchers is geared for those who love to eat. When it comes to losing weight, what works for you is all that matters. So whatever you choose, make sure you can stay with it.
Sending good vibes your way...

Thanks for all the tips every one! I think I'm gonna take a two pronged approach. I feel like too many people just try to go cold turkey to lose weight by going from their normal (albeit bad) diet to a new healthy one overnight. I know that has to be impossible to do in the long term. I also know that when most people start to exercise its this insane "P90X" style boot camp, when last night you were on the couch.
So with all that in mind, I'm going to take a four week "adjustment period" where I casually back off the bad foods, and start to mix in some light exercise.
Then once i've gotten a little closer to the good side of the spectrum, i'll really kick in the extremely healthy diet and intense exercise program.
Also, has anyone gone the no carbs, Atkins style diet before? I have had a few friends do it with usually good results, although from what I hear you have to adhere to it 100%, or you kick your body out of ketosis (where from what I understand your body is on full fat burning phase). Also, I don't think I would do the high fatty meats part... that just seems unhealthy even if you are losing weight. So I'll probably try the fish, turkey, egg whites, green veggies approach... while cutting out the sugars, breads, and processed crap. Also, I am gonna stick to all water, I have seen time and time again where that really seems to help on so many fronts!
So tonight is my first visit to the gym. I'm gonna do a light upper arms and shoulders workout:
Dumbell curls (free weights)
Bicep curls (rope)
Overhead triceps (rope)
Standing triceps (rope)
Shoulder shrugs
Dumbell flys
30 minutes light to moderate cardio
Well, that's all for today, thanks again for the good vibes!

If you do Atkins, make sure you read the book first. It is not a no carb diet and if you stop the weight come back fast. Go with a moderate carb diet, eating the majority of your carbs in the morning and lunch and very little carbs in the evening. Cut out the crap food, soda and eating out. Do whole grains when you do have bread or pasta, lower your calorie count and exercise more. Make sure you are eating 5 or 6 small meals a day and drink lots of water.

Just stop eating when your full. Often when people eat they aren't paying attention to their stomachs. Once your not hungry... Stop. There will always be food available. You will not die of starvation, so why overeat?
I'm working on that myself.
Atkins never seemed to fit for me. I've heard horror stories of people going back to eating carbs and gain it all back plus some.

Wow, this is what SWF has become since I've last been on?  Clemson is taking Darth to the cleaners now?  :)
Apparently you need a lesson in dry cleaning. I owned him, he agreed with my assessment that he was pregnant and acting like a girl. Let me break it down for you.
