So I went to the Denver Aquarium....

So I went to the Downtown Denver Aquarium last weekend and had the time of my life! I had gone once a while ago (long before I got my SW aquarium), and it was a TOTALLY different experience this time. Rather than being that person saying "ooh look it's the 'Dory' fish from 'Finding Nemo'" I was now saying "Oh, look at that huge Blue Tang!" and I was staring at the various coral tanks trying to identify everything that I've been learning about. I'm going to San Antonio TX in a couple of weeks to see my sister. One of the 1st things on my 'must do' list is visit Sea World. I'm sooooo excited!!
Here are some pics from our visit to the Downtown Denver Aquarium

Neat. I'm glad you got to go to an aquarium. It's always fun to look around at everything and try to identify it. It brings a whole new level to your life experience. Well done. :D
Now you should come see the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. :D

I would love to visit New Orleans one day! Of course I'd have to see the aquarium but I would also love to hear some amazing music. One of my favorite shows is HBO's 'Treme'. Have you ever seen the show? Was the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans affected by Katrina?

It's great that you got to go to a large public aquaria. Whenever I'm traveling, I almost always have to find some way to visit the local aquarium. lol.

Visiting the aquarium made me wonder how people that work or volunteer at these public aquariums feel about people who have personal SW aquariums?? Do you think they generally have a positive feeling about people involved in the hobby or a negative one?

Positive. I know first hand.... lol... my sister volunteered at a public aquarium for 6 years! (And she's also a hobbyist)

lol. New Orleans isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Gotta be careful about pickpockets, gangs and thieves in certain areas. If you want to hear some Jazz and R&B, you need to hang out around the French Quarter and the Marketplace. If you do get to go one day, eat a Binet at Cafe Du Monde and drink a Cafe AuLait. :D If you want, I can post some pics of the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans,... I might be able to find it in an old thread if you are interested. No. I have never seen the show Treme. I do not have digital, satilite or cable television, or even Netflix. I get to listen to the radio at my workplace though! lol
Oh, and yes, it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, but they got it all back up and running. They just charge more now per ticket. LOL!

That's good to hear. For some reason, I was worried the volunteers or employees might have this idea that hobbyists are major contributors to the decline of certain species of fish or coral or that it's in-humane to keep them in aquariums as opposed to their natural environments.
On a totally different note: I have to admit, sometimes I wonder if my fish would be happier living in gorgeous natural reefs. Then I remember that they get regular feasts of mysis, cyclops, and formula 1, and that their water is super clean and stable.... and most importantly they don't have to worry about being eaten or chased by any natural preditors. I sure hope they're happy and not bored with the same old environment and the same tank mates day after day...lol
When I get back from vacation I have everything ready for a QT and I plan on adding my next fish to my 29 gallon (I have 2 clowns & a Fire Fish right now). I can't decide between the following:
- A Blue forktail (Assessor macneilli)
- An Orchid dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)
- A Fairy Wrasse (not sure which type yet?
- Coral Beauty Pygmy Angel (Centropyge bispinosa)
I'm looking for something with the following characteristics:

  • Can live in a nano (29 gallon)

  • Colorful or interesting pattern or unique shape

  • reef safe
Will be okay in an aquarium that's not fully mature (it's just a little over 5 months)
Something that will not go after my Firefish or Clowns
Does anyone have any ideas???? Please! I would really LOVE some suggestions!
