I noticed this guy a few weeks ago. It is made up of a bunch "pods". There are about 3 pods that make up the center and then a semicircle of pods around it. In total it is about 1/4" diameter. It has been getting bigger since I noticed it, but not the size of the pods, just the number. I suspect within a week or 2 they will have formed a complete circle around the center.
I am thinking it might not be a sponge because it is on the top of the rock, not underneath where it wouldnt get any light.

First off sponges usually do grow in low light areas like on the bottom sides of rocks.
As for an ID the picture is too blurry. Can you get a better closer pic?

That was the best picture out of about 10 that I took. My camera is not good at taking pictures of the tank. I will try again when football is over in a bit.

best way i've taken pics is to use the "self portrait" setting on my camera. also, DON'T zoom in on it. just go about half way in.

This is about the best I can do. It is at a angle to the front of the glass so its hard to get a good shot.
