I have a 29gallon tank, I was telling my friend who owns a pet store that I had star polyps and some mushrooms, I was told these would be fine in a low light tank, she has suggested a protien skimmer and has offered to let me have it, does this mean my tank will be harder to keep up or easier? if I were to get better lighting can it now be a reef tank? I was told if I wasnt doing reef then I didnt need the protien skimmer. thanks for all your help I sure do love this site!

A protien skimmer is an essential part of a salt water aquarium. the skimmer acts as the waves of the ocean - foam fractionator. this removes elements from the tank - essential to keep your algae and your tank cleaner.
the maintenance of the skimmer is real simple (i was nervous too) and as long as you continue to do water changes and add trace elements, there's nothing else to do.

wow, if you friend is giving out skimmer than take it :) Although I have been running a reef tank for years now without one, you would just have to do more water changes. It is true that nature has it's own skimmer, have you noticed the white caps that blow off on waves.. well that is the natural version. Like I stated I personally don't feel they are crucial, but if it's free than hey why not. And yes it would make the tank a little easier to maintian as it takes care of D.O.C so water changes are needed less frequently. HTH

skimmers, can be and are a great tool, esp. for the beginner, but not essential,
however if someone is going to give you one, BY ALL MEANS get it, it cannot hurt one bit, it's like someone were to give you cental air to replace room units, it would only be more efficient and easier to care for
