for the record I searched and have been reading for hrs. I would really like some expert advice here.
I have 90gal non RR FOWLR that I just converted from FW. currently I use a Rena filstar xp3 I would like to convert to a sump but have concerns about flooding. I understand the basic's but if I lose power the overflow box will drain down to the notches which is fine but once power resumes wouldn't the over flow box have lost siphon and flood my DT?
what's the safest over flow box?
IF I decide to not do the sump and just wait till I purchase a new 180+ RR tank what can I do that will make the xps3 more marine compatible.
I have not purchased a skimmer yet until I decide which route I am going to go.
I will be adding a few anemones and MAYBE some softcorals way way down the road.
I really appreciate all the advice and help.

Don't know much about your filter turned sump, but...
I use a little air pump called an Aqua lifter on my overflow box to ensure the syphon starts back up. It cost me $12, I have heard that in some cases it failed though.
Safest overflow box? I am about to purchase a Lifereef prefilter box. They guarantee them to start back up. They make 2 models, one for 700GPH and the other 1400GPH max overflow. I have read by other "experts" on this site say they have had 0 problems in 3 or 4+ years with Lifereef prefilter boxes.
My question for you is...your previously freshwater tank...did you ever introduce copper chemicals/medicines into that tank to treat your freshwater fish? If so, I would not add any corals ever to that tank. Same with that XP3 filter, if copper medicines ran through it I would advise against using it with your marine setup.
Good luck.

oddly enough I have never used any chemicals besides vitamins and such in any tank I have had for the last 10 yrs. quaraintine tank is the only way to go

A properly designed HOB Overflow should not loose it's siphon if the power goes out and the tank drains down to the "teeth"...
"U" tube designs (lifereef) tend to be more reliable than the "box" (cpr) type...
The Rena (down the road) can be converted to run carbon bags or Phosphate media bags and provide a "little" extra circulation...once the sump is up and running...

Hi Squidd!!! My sump is doing good, thanks for all your help.
I know Squidd likes to make his own HOB overflow boxes and uses the U-tube design. If you're interested in making your own out of acrylic search and you'll be impressed by Squidd's instructions on how to make one yourself.
