Sorta odd dog question....

Well I think we're ready to go get a puppy (I posted a thread about loosing our Buddy a little bit ago).
Anyways we've narrowed it down. We figure we enjoy taking our Labs to the creek/bay all the time, so why not get a dog that will love water, but similar to Labs? Chesapeake Bay Retriever. We found a breeder earlier in the week with the perfect timing, the pups will be 6 weeks old this Saturday. I will have to post pics.
The issue at hand is the parents. They are absolutely gorgeous dogs, the only thing is their age. The male was born Nov. 1999. The female was Feb 2008. From their pictures they sent us, you'd be hard pressed to know the father was that old. My concern is there anything to worry about with a sire that old? I've been looking and looking, even for farm live stock to answer this, but nothing. I think from the lack of anwsers, I have nothing to worry about.

I don't think age should be too much of a factor, especially if they've had successful litters in the past. With labs make sure they you get them checked out for hip-dysplasia.

+1
Get a wellness check ASAP always, sometimes it still isn’t enough. AKC offers a great program for insuring against health issues, with a small deductible $100.00 you will have no worries, it cost about $20.00 a month. I kept it up for my Atticus (German shepherd) for 2 full years, because of possible hip issues in the breed. Hip problems cost like $3000.00 per hip to fix, and even if the puppy seems fine now, it could show up later on, up to the first two years of age.

Now I am NO EXPERT at all on the subject. This is purely my conjecture. But I'd think the risk associated with older dogs would be in pregnacy not once the puppies are ready to be off on their own. But I may be wrong.

The pup will come fully AKC'ed, 2 year guarantee, of course everything clearing the future vet visits.

That's the thing, I just wish I could find something. Everything I've read says males are typically used from 2-6. Well, why? It's not just Chessies, but all dogs, and even live stock, the males have a set number of years. I guess what I'm looking for is just any on tendencies a father that senior would have the offspring. Is the fact that he's 11, and "still got it"
, nice and strong and virility, implying a positive on their litter? I'm sure seeing things, but the pups look a little large for 6 weeks old...

Or you could say they are really good at making babies since they've made so many of them already...
But seriously, why not try looking differently. Instead of looking for it from the puppy perspective, why not search for information about breeding older dogs. Maybe you'll get a footnote about the results (puppies).
