cork will help.
any way to force sound to change mediums will dampen its transfer. try going to a car stereo place and buying sound cloth (leaden like sticky stuff that eliminates vibration.... or sound) cheap way out would be any type of insulator. foam, cardboard, or anything that is baffled. if you went from cork to sheet metal back to cork the extreme change in media would severly dampen sound..

I have to agree my aquarium is do loud. The car sound deadlining material is called dynamat and its expensive. But its easy to apply. Its sticky on one side but once it attaches you wont ever get it off. Its also real heavy stuff.
My question is how do you create a silence for the overflow?

Ah....silence. One of my main goals with my aquarium. I have it in my room and I like a quiet environment for sleeping.
I'm in the process of switching filtration methods on my 55 gallon. I recently got my overflow box I ordered online and am planning on buying the materials and building a sump this weekend. I've been thinking about soundshielding recently too. Eventually I'll have to buy a pump, of course I want it quet, but if it isn't quiet enough, i'm planning on buying some insulation. In my field there's this certain material they use to line engine compartments and generator boxes/covers to pretty much eliminate sound. American Acoustical Sound Insulation is what it's called. They have different thicknesses of course, and it's supposed to be some good stuff. I'm planning on giving that a go if necessary. Also planning on silencing my overflow box if possible. I'll post what I do and how sucessfull it is as I go.

silencer for the over flow is pretty simple, build a baffled box and put cotton in it and place over the top of the over flow. you get about a 60percent reduction in noise the bigger and more baffles the quieter it gets three baffles and two layers of cotton keeps it small but effective (you still hear some splashing/siphoning but its very muted) I had one on mine but got sick of looking at it because I made it ugly, and took it off. I also am not bothered by the noise because I have so many nocturnal critters banging away on running wheels that the white noise actually helps.
