skirrby, i have 7-8 50# bags for sale as i overbought recently when i found a HD 2 hours away from me that had 115 bags in stock. No, Southdown did not get bought out, you just have to look for it in the right places. My price to you would be $10.00 a bag plus whatever shipping would cost me to send to you. Yes, it is Southdown and i just put some in my new tank and it is gorgeous sand. I now know why everybody is highly recommending it. BTW the HD that i found it in is in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

They did get bought out. Same bag says TROPICAL PLAY SAND.but made by old castle now. DOES NOT SAY SOUTHDOWN BUT BAG LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME JUST DOES NOT SAY SOUTHDOWN. DO NOT USE THE OTHER SAND IT HAS SILICA IN IT AND WILL GIVE YOU TERRIBLE ALGAE.

DO NOT USE THE OTHER SAND IT HAS SILICA IN IT AND WILL GIVE YOU TERRIBLE ALGAE.
silicate causes algae and the permeation of silicate from silica sand is so minute that it will not matter. I use pure silica sand. I have an algae problem.
Silcates 0
po4 0
nitrates 0
so the silica sand will not cause a problem....it is hard to keep clean though.
the only problem with most silica sand is that it has been crushed repeatedly causing very sharp particles that inhibit the growth of infauna in the DSB. i use a mixtuer of the pure white silica sand (purchased at a masonry store) mixed with the quik krete playsand.

You might add Cleburne Marine in Cleburne Tx to your list. The only place in the Mid-South I've found.

Where's Cleburn, I'm on my way to Houston on Monday. How much do they sell it for?
EDIT: aarone, that isn't a road trip, that's across the street for you, but it certainly is on my way back from Houston. I couldn't find Cleburne Marine in the phone listings, do you think you could get me a phone number for that joint?

First off, Old Castle bought out Southdown. That's why there has been some confusion. I bought 600 lbs from Cleburne Marine. Half of the bags were Southdown, the others said Old Castle. The only difference is that Old Castle removed the name "Southdown" and put the warning on it about "not recomended for aquarium use".
Cleburne is just off of I-35 south of Ft. Worth. Bags sell for $15 bucks per 50lb bag.... much more than our lucky Home Depot friends, but much less than trying to fill your tank from sand on the web.

Aarone, Cleburne Marine delivers to the metroplex, so you might not even need to make the drive. The guy you need to talk to is named Cody.
email me at jdixon@pipeline.com if you need more info. It took me forever to find this sand. I'm more than happy to share the info.

"not recomended for aquarium use".
That is really only in freshwater systems when the CaCo3 dissolves into the water.....or something like that.
Thanx for the info...i will give you an email later today:happy:

Actually, from what I understand, it's because of an agreement that Old Castle has with a vendor online who sells their sand at much higher prices...

clownfishy, if you have a Home Depot in the area go there and have them look on their computer for the stores that have it in stock. Give them this SKU #578-819. That is what i did and i found it 2 hours away in Fort Wayne. If that doesnt work i have several bags for sale at $10.00 a bag plus my cost to ship to you.
