Months ago I got a red ball sponge, and it began slowly withering away. I tossed it behind all the live rock as I didn't want to throw it away until it was completely dead, and I knew it wouldn't pollute too much as it decayed. Anyway, I recently checked back there and noticed that it had "shed" a bunch of itself (the dead parts). It's now healthy a deep orange/red. Under my eye it was never removed from the water, and I have it now occupying available shaded real estate. Anyway, don't give up on your sponges until they're completely gone!
